Who watches the Watchmen? This March....everyone.
So you think you're down with pop culture, huh? Well, if you haven't heard of the Watchmen, it's time to go back to class.
The single greatest graphic novel ever created took the world by storm in 1986. No one had ever seen anything like it. It was brilliant. It was epic. Writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons fired the first real volley in the deconstructionist movement of the genre, and nothing's been the same since. It's been imitated, homaged, ripped off and analyzed for over two decades, and fans of it debated amongst themselves if it would ever see adaptation on the silver screen.
Hollywood wondered, too. Countless attempts have begun, all of them falling apart before fruition. But everything has its season. And Watchmen was waiting for just the right time, and the right creative (and brave) hand, to step off the page and onto the screen. Director Zach Snyder blew enough minds with his film adaptation of Frank Miller's "300" to get the job. And on March 6, the long wait for those in the know will finally be over. And if the trailer is any indication, the wait has been worth it.
New Watchmen Trailer
Dark and violent, thought-provoking and heartbreaking, it's a story that questions everything and doesn't fear the answers. If you've read it, you know there's no way to properly capture it in one film. But the audacity to try, alone, is enough to merit the hype that's starting to grow. Can Hollywood pull it off? One way or another, we're going to find out.
Have a nice day.
Hurm.
